Yurt Craftsman

   I was inspired as a boy growing up by my grandmother – Shirley Reed of Sherrill, NY.   We spent a lot of time together and one story that sticks out in my memory was about how she had wished to be an architect.  As valedictorian of her high-school class that was certainly a possibility.  I’m sure she didn’t regret one second of the time with her 7 children but, raising them all up didn’t allow time for all that University time.  I named the yurt company in honor of her and her strong spirit that still lives with me today.

Today I am inspired by the versatility and uniqueness of the yurts that I create.  I have built yurts for a wide variety of uses and with each yurt that I craft, I combine the dreams of my clients with my knowledge to create a one-of-a-kind yurt.

I have built yurts all over the northeast United States, the West Coast, as well as a few ventures into Canada.

Surely Yurts was established in 2009. I was living in a 20’ yurt in Jeffersonville, Vermont at the time very near to Smugglers’ Notch when a couple friends asked if I could build a yurt for them. They liked our setup so much that they wanted their own yurt to start a new life together focused around a massive garden and a small farm. After building that first yurt I loved the work so much that I closed my photography studio in town, changed my business plan, and went into the yurt manufacturing industry. I started by designing & building a workshop, traveling and learning from many other yurt builders around the nation.
